u Notes from the Underground: Perspectives on Iraq

Perspectives on Iraq

Thursday, May 04, 2006

Three years after the Americans officially declared victory in Iraq, here is retrospection and reflection from three analysts with different perspectives on the situation. I particularly liked Tom Palmer's "Six facts about Iraq".

Looks like Iran is next, though it hasn't done anything patently illegal with its nuke program yet. And the Americans have already started panicking about the consequent oil price surges. Go figure.

Since CNN is among the few English channels here, I have sit and listen to loads of dumb propaganda just because I need to listen to scarce tidbits of real news. Hours spent in listen to CNN commentators like Wolf Blitzer, Jack Cafferty and so on can seriously maim a growing child's mentality.

Firstly, nice to have you drop by!

On the question of Iran, I think Bush or his successor will have much more trouble convincing the nation to go to war. Christopher Hitchens wrote this article where he argues that the best way out in Iran is by resuming normal relations with it. Iran has a largely young population frustrated with the fundamentalists, and it's not too much to expect change from within. Do read the piece.

Whatcha doing with a TV if you want to know real news? ;-).

I keep dropping by, it's just that I end up composing comments that grow too large to be called comments and end up deleting them!

Good article, though I still find it hard to believe that an Islamic society could so overwhelmingly accept a completely western way of life voluntarily. If you recall, Ataturk in Turkey instigated his pro-western reforms by force amidst rumblings from all sections of society.

And I agree about the real news part; the American MSM has been raped to an extent that you can't help but be derisive even when anchors deliver some undoctored news. The Zacharias Mossaoui trial last night was hilarious!

Dont delete your comments man! Atleast post them on your blog and link to them in comments sections, it would be nice to have some discussion going.

The oil-rich countries do have a mostly western way of life, dont they? My understanding is that Iranians do want greater political freedom, they are only finding it tough to implement change.
